Automotive Ethernet is carrying more data for cameras, sensors, displays and centralised computing systems. As networks progress from 100BASE-T1 to multi-gigabit links, cable and connector performance becomes more critical. Testing must therefore extend beyond individual components to the complete communication channel.
The limits of traditional lab testing
Detailed signal-integrity testing has traditionally relied on benchtop vector network analysers and specialist RF expertise. While these systems provide accurate measurements, they can require complex calibration, test setup and interpretation. This makes it harder to deploy consistent testing across engineering, validation and production environments.
Whole-channel testing matters
A cable may meet its specification independently but perform differently once connectors, terminations and additional cable sections are introduced.
Testing the complete channel provides a more realistic indication of how the network will behave in the vehicle and helps identify problems caused by the assembled system.

Greater visibility with four-port testing
Four-port measurement allows engineers to assess reflection and transmission characteristics across multiple signal paths. Time-domain reflectometry can also help locate impedance changes along the assembly. Together, these capabilities provide more diagnostic insight than a basic pass/fail result.
AEM Networks’ VNA 6 GHz 4-port solution
AEM Networks’ VNA 6 GHz 4-Port solution is designed for testing BASE-T1 link segments from 100BASE-T1 through 10GBASE-T1. Built around the TestPro CV100 platform, it supports all 16 four-port S-parameter measurements, including return loss, insertion loss and cross-port transmission measurements. Configurable test limits allow these measurements to be assessed against applicable OPEN Alliance specifications for Automotive Ethernet link segments.
The system also provides TDR, fixture calibration, configurable test limits, automated pass/fail assessment and PDF or CSV reporting. With a stated test time of 15 seconds for 1,000 measurement points, it is intended to make advanced cable and channel characterisation more structured and repeatable.
Bringing testing closer to production
The key development is not simply the availability of another VNA. It is the movement of advanced automotive Ethernet testing towards a workflow that can be used more consistently outside a specialist laboratory. Bringing measurement, diagnosis and reporting together can help engineering and production teams troubleshoot faster and gain greater confidence in completed cable assemblies and communication channels.
